USS Cod Submarine Memorial: Cleveland Historical Landmark Guide

The USS Cod Submarine Memorial, docked on the shores of Lake Erie in Cleveland, is a formidable steel titan of the "Silent Service." Commissioned in 1943, this Gato-class submarine completed seven successful war patrols in the Pacific during World War II. It earned fame for the first international submarine-to-submarine rescue in history, saving the crew of a grounded Dutch sub. Notably, it remains the most authentic museum ship of its kind; unlike others, its pressure hull has never been cut, requiring visitors to enter through the original vertical ladders and hatches used by the sailors. The scenery at the pier is a study in monumental stillness. The blackened, salt-etched hull of the Cod sits low in the water, framed by the shimmering expanse of Lake Erie and the modern Cleveland skyline. On a quiet morning, the rhythmic lapping of waves against the steel plates and the cry of gulls create a haunting atmosphere. The rugged deck guns, now silent, point toward the horizon, standing as steel silhouettes against the pastel hues of the lakeside sunrise. To the contemplative visitor, the Cod is a cloisters of courage. Descending into its cramped, metallic belly, one feels an immediate, heavy connection to the eighty men who once shared this pressurized breath. It is a place where time is compressed as tightly as the air. Standing in the dim glow of the control room, one realizes that this is not merely a machine, but a vessel of memory—a poignant reminder of the thin line between the vastness of the ocean and the indomitable strength of the human heart.

Went today with my girlfriend because we were looking for something to do before our anniversary dinner plans at 4 and said “let’s just go check out the USS Cod!” and boy are we glad we did! Such a historic vessel, it was beyond cool! We had no clue we’d end up with a personal tour guide, but we did! Chris told us the history of the vessel as well as some of his stories. He truly made it worth coming out for and he absolutely did a phenomenal job explaining everything and answering questions we asked. He made our day! It was only in the high 20’s when we went so it was cold! but the vessel wasn’t too cold if you had a nice coat and some pants on so do keep that in mind if you plan to explore in the winter time! Other than that, definitely worth going to and Chris made it even better, so thankful a special vessel like this has someone like this preserving the history of it. If you see Chris, ask him to personally guide you through it! It makes it 100x better! Thank you Chris for being absolutely awesome!

Visited Saturday afternoon during the Cleveland Air Show. The submarine is very impressive, as is the atmosphere with a jeep, the original periscope and propeller on display outside the sub. The access they give to visitors is very impressive, as you are able to climb down the fore hatch, tour inside through the entire sub and exit through the aft hatch. The main areas have audio tours telling you about the area you are in, as well as reenactors giving demonstrations and answering questions. They also fired off the 5" cannon, which was amazing. The admission is $15 for adults, and the admission booth also has some souvenirs. There is a paid parking lot nearby. Be aware that climbing down into the sub, walking through and climbing back out, while not difficult for the able bodied will definitely pose a challenge to anyone with limiting disabilities or the elderly. An amazing experience.

Wow, what a great experience. We would highly recommend a visit here. The staff was very friendly. The sub is really cool, still very maintained. It's a little hard getting into and out of the sub, but if you want the experience, that's how you do it! It's a self guided tour, but they have audio that you can listen to alone the way. Very educational. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Brought my nephew as a starter experience to museum ships and he really enjoyed it. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly!
